The Aspartame Controversy

“Complete abstinence is easier than perfect moderation,” said Saint Augustine. Now, over 1,600 years later and in a world filled with preservative-pumped food products, his words have only become more pertinent.
Aspartame’s potential toxicity has been debated for over 40 years but this popular additive – dubbed ‘sweet poison’ by skeptics – can be found in sodas, puddings, yogurt and chewing gum, as well as in 6,000 other products worldwide. It is better known as Nutrasweet, the low-calorie alternative to sugar, and it is approved for use in over 90 countries.
“There has been no credible, scientific evidence that links aspartame to any health-related problems,” says Susan Somerville, a registered dietician and program coordinator of Humber Read more

“I didn’t know if I was going to live – I was almost killed. I was beaten to a pulp. On my face, on my shoulders, I had nothing but scars. I was afraid that I was dying because I was bleeding inside,” says Torontonian Trisha Smith.
Every year, thousands of Canadians travel outside our borders in the hopes of some much-needed rest and relaxation. For the most part, stories about these foreign adventures are filled with sunny skies, blissful scenery and cultural enlightenment. Yet there are rare tales so terrible they resemble a Hollywood drama – stories of detainment, abuse and blatant disregard for personal rights. These horrific circumstances often result from a simple lack of knowledge about local laws and customs. The idea of the law of the land is a very real and powerful concept that still holds true today. Understanding your rights and responsibilities when traveling to Read more

An annual fall gala uniting beauty and health had Shoppers Drug Mart’s Beauty Boutique on Highway 7 and Ansley Grove Road tickled pink on Sept. 18, 2010. The Pretty in Pink event garnered much attention, with guests enjoying free makeup and skin care consultations as they fundraised money with pretty pink cupcakes by Gloria’s Cakes. The Look Good Feel Better Charity – a program helping women deal with the side effects of chemotherapy through makeup and wig workshops – was the main focus at the event, with cupcake sales and $5 from each gala ticket sold going towards the program. To Fill or not to Fill

Here’s the diagnosis: loss of volume, not (regrettably) from the hips, but from the cheeks and “marionette” area. Portions of my face are not only wrinkling, but they are magically disappearing.
What now – undergo the pain and expense of a cosmetic procedure at this stage in my life? This is not necessarily the classic futile quest for eternal youth and beauty (at least I don’t think so). My aspirations are rather humble; mainly, I don’t want to look older than I am. (I also don’t want to look older than my mother – at 82, her skin is smooth as glass). And I don’t want to look older than my friends, to be the one looking across from them at lunch thinking: “Didn’t we used to be the same age?” To me, just figuring out what kind of cosmetic procedure I want seems as intimidating as ordering a gourmet meal off a menu written in a foreign language. And then there’s the pain and bruising, plus the need to use precious work Read more
