The first annual five-kilometre Walk for Thalassemia was held in Toronto and Whitby on May 8, 2011, marking International Thalassemia Day. Together, the walkathons raised $8,000 for the Thalassemia Foundation of Canada. Funds will support scientific research, treatment, patient services, public awareness and education of the rare genetic blood disorder. www.thalassemia.ca
