On June 14, 2012, an inspiring event at the Bellagio Boutique Event Venue gathered over 200 guests in support of children in Vaughan and North York who cannot afford funding for behavioural/occupational therapy. Established by Dimitri and Francesca Giankoulas in an attempt to spread awareness and raise much-needed funds for this endeavour, an impressive $12,000 was raised. Proceeds went towards Under the Umbrella Tree, an intensive, early intervention behavioural treatment centre that specializes with kids and parents dealing with autism.

Stilettos for the Cure

On June 8, 2012, over 500 well-heeled guests were treated to a cabaret-style affair for Stilettos for the Cure in Oshawa, Ont. The fundraising event featured entertainment by Cindy Ashton and drag performers Farra N. Hyte and Savanaugh Davenport. Five hundred pairs of heels were auctioned off to support the Heather Griffith Breast Assessment Centre at Lakeridge Health Oshawa and the Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness, with nearly $10,000 being raised for each cause. Among the shoes donated were pairs from ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey, Dragons’ Den’s Arlene Dickinson and eTalk’s Tanya Kim.

On June 17, 2012, Consiglio Di Nino (a former Canadian senator) recognized staff members and volunteers of Villa Charities for their dedicated service to peer members and the community. They were each honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in the rotunda at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery at Columbus Centre. Kids for Kids is a heartwarming fashion company that features clothing with child-made artwork. Young artists and orphans from Tara Children’s Project in Bihar, India, as well as Gone Rural in Swaziland, Africa, have lent their unique drawings to this project. Designer Iris Shiloh developed this company after spending eight years as a fashion designer in New York City. A portion of each sale is donated back to the children in underprivileged communities around the world.

BPW Annual Charity Golf Tournament

The 17th Annual Charity Golf Tournament of the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Brampton was held at the Caledon Country Club this year, with over 100 participants raising funds for three charities: the Salvation Army’s Honeychurch Family Life Resource Centre, Walk with Me, a human trafficking survivors program, and Buddys ‘N Bows, which supports the Caring Companion Program at Brampton Civic Hospital. BPW Brampton raised over $6,000 this year for the worthy causes.

Vaughan’s Concerts in the Park and Canada Day

This summer, Vaughan held its 18th annual series of concerts in the park! Free of charge, residents came together as a community and enjoyed fun-filled musical events, including The Game: A Live Tribute to the Queen, Hollywood: Live Musical Production of Michael Bublé featuring Paul Schwarz and The Toronto All-Star Big Band. The final concert, Elevation: International U2 Tribute Band, will be held on Aug. 7, 2012, at the Outdoor Amphitheatre of the North Thornhill Community Centre. On Canada Day, the City of Vaughan held an exclusive concert at Mackenzie Glen District Park in Maple, with performances by Platinum Blonde, JRDN, Talk, Tamika Soul and Bridge 6.

Italian Car Day

In support of The Safehaven Project for Community Living, Italian Car Day was a huge success. Over 2,000 spectators attended the event and enjoyed hundreds of luxurious Italian automobiles on-site for one of the largest shows of its kind in North America. Spectators were wowed with the inviting balance between the new sports cars and vintage models. The collection of rare and museum pieces that was displayed at the Engineered Automotive site was most admired. As well, the Ferrari–Maserati display area remained a strong and engaging focal point throughout Italian Car Day. The event raised over $20,000. Safehaven donates 96 cents of every dollar to children with multiple disabilities and medical needs, covering costs for outings and activities in the community to enrich their lives.

Starting in Vaughan and riding through the Niagara Escarpment with a monumental stop in front of SickKids hospital, motorcyclists will raise funds towards research and treatment for cardiology and brain tumours in children. Celebrity appearances, a wine tour and promotional draw will all be part of the action. With the help of visionaries Salvatore Oliveti, Joe Linardi, Joseph Manzoli, Loredana Oliveti, Alex Lombardi and Lisa Arena, this is sure to be a grand success.

It was the Annual Business Achievement Awards held by the Vaughan Chamber of Commerce. Among the recipients was Vivian Risi of Royal LePage – Your Community Realty, who was honoured with the Philanthropic Business Person of the Year award.
